Ciao! It has been awhile! Bit by bit I have been chipping away at this post and finally I am able to share with you what was an amazing seven nights and six days in Italy.

This was my second visit to the country of eternal romanticism and certainly not my last. I fell in love with it even more than I had the first time just over twelve years ago (was it that long already?!?). Starting off in Pisa, we rented a car and drove a few hours north to the picturesque coastal town of Camogli on the Italian Riviera. Having already visited Portofino and Santa Margarita Ligure I had longed to return to this area and was so happy to do so. Camogli was a fairly quiet spot and had the perfect tourist to local ratio. I would definitely return here again, if only to stay at the amazing boutique hotel I chose from the Mr. & Mrs. Smith website, Villa Rosmarino. Outstanding service from the owner Fulvio and his excellent staff. I am always so inspired when meeting people like Fulvio. This very accomplished man spoke Italian, French, Spanish and English flawlessly and had the best recommendations on where to eat, drink and be merry not only in Italy but in New York, London, Paris, and Los Angeles too. Classy guy. Him and his partner Mario purchased Rosmarino in 2000 before putting five years of restoration into it. It was a shame to only have two nights here but I know we will be back. There really is something magical about this corner of the world.

Beautiful setting and very traditional, "Nonna Nina" style Ligurian Italian cooking.

A short boat ride away from the Camogli harbour, this cliff side restaurant offers superb ocean views and is ideal for sunset dining. Excellent quality local dishes. The pasta with fresh anchovies was outstanding and so was the freshly caught fish served with traditional accompanyments. An amazing meal with a beautiful view and great service, I definitely recommend this restaurant.

Stopped here for lunch while in Portofino. Great recommendation from Francesca at Villa Rosmarino. Beautiful setting with delicious genovese pasta and fish dishes. Fresh pappardelle with house made pesto and tomato sauce? Yes please….

Do:

Take the Ferry from Camogli to San Fruttuoso.

San Fruttuoso is a great spot for swimming and beaching Med style if not too busy with tourists. Even so, despite this I personally couldn't resist the clear blue waters, and I'm so glad I didn't! If you've never swam in the Mediterranean Sea don't give up your chance if you get one, trust me! From San Fruttuoso you can take another ferry company to Portofino. From Portofino you can walk back to Santa Margherita (45 min along the coastal road) then take the bus or train back to Villa Rosmarino where a cold glass of white wine and local olives will be waiting for you. Not bad, not bad...

Hike or have lunch in Cinque Terre.

Twelve years ago, and probably still to this day, Cinque Terre is one of the most memorable and stunning hikes I have ever done in my life. In one day you can traverse five picturesque coastal towns apart of the Cinque Terre National Park (also a UNESCO World Heritage site). If hiking is not your thing, take a boat from Portofino to Vernazza, the only town accessible by boat and dine at the enchanting Belforte (42 Via Guidoni, Cinque Terre; +39 0187 812222) which has approximately ten seats on a terrace that literally hangs over a cliff. Hello perfect. :)

Tuscany: Chiusi and Florence

After two delightful days on the coast we headed back towards Pisa, descending to the south of Tuscany to Chiusi. Although I had been to Tuscany before, there is always more to see and experience. This time around, while travelling with G, we decided to try and keep the doing to a minimal in order to just enjoy the beautiful grounds of our hotel and surrounding towns. It was a perfect three days in the country before heading to Florence for our last night in Italy, an amazing country with incredible people that I long to return to over and over again. Grazie, grazie mille!!!  È stato incredible!!! Ciao, ciao! Ciao bella Italia! :)

Another great pick from Mr. and Mrs. Smith,  Poggio Piglia was the perfect mix of upscale hotel and country inn to greet us after a four hour drive from the coast. Paulo, the front desk Manager was a wonderful host and pleasure to talk to. The property has it's own vineyards and olive groves, an infinity pool, and stellar restaurant. Another bonus was the variety of running paths (advised by Paulo) to choose from if you are an explorer type like me and need another excuse for the daily wine and bread habit which inevitably becomes second nature after a few days. Just don't try to fight it, okay? It's not worth it, trust me. You won't regret it.

Hotel Alessandra Borgo SS. Apostoli, 17 - 50123 Florence +39 0552 83438

With only one evening to spend in Florence, we didn't feel the need for a fancy hotel, just something clean with a good location for visiting the city. Hotel Alessandra fit the bill and our experience there was above and beyond my expectations. Mario, the front desk agent was very helpful with everything, even saving us from not being able to return our rental car on time*. The hotel manager, Andrea also upgraded us to a two bedroom suite with a balcony overlooking the River Arno. Great spot for exploring Florence on a reasonable budget, great service too.

*Note to non-Europeans: Always remember that most rental car offices (in France and Italy at least) close at the most ridiculous times, including the infamous two hour lunch break from 12pm - 2pm, and then again at 5 or 6pm on weekends so make sure you get that vehicle back there before they close or you might be missing your flight as we almost did one time in France.

La Grotta was outstanding. For sure the best overall meal we had in Italy. The outdoor garden terrace is stunning and the whole experience felt like we were apart of A Midsummer's Night Dream production. Reservations required. Highly recommend.

There were a few places that we had tried to get into for dinner in Florence on the Saturday night that we were there but unfortunately they were all either closed for holidays or fully booked. Our friend at Hotel Alessandra arranged a reservation for us here, and although a tad too touristy the food and atmosphere was pretty good. Try their pasta with fresh shaved truffles for only twenty euros.

Do:

If eating, drinking, taking leisurely walks through the countryside and lounging by the infinity pool isn't enough for you than you might want to check out the neighbouring Medieval towns. On the first day we ventured into Montepulciano which was a lovely place to visit as it is car-free and offers stunning views of the surrounding land. We also made it over to Cortona on our second day which was equally as pleasing. Most of all I just love walking around and thinking about how old everything is and how many generations of people have come and gone since those walls were built. How different things must have been back then. It's all so fascinating to me and I always feel so grateful to even be there. Travel is such a gift, isn't it?

Summer has officially ended and we are now full throttle into fall. As a way of coping with the slight sadness that I inevitably feel at this time of year I wanted to dedicate a post to my favourite photos of this year's summer in Calgary. Weather-wise it was not particularly spectacular; there was of course the disastrous flooding in June that left many homeless for the whole season, and even afterwards the rain and cloud cover refused to let up until mid August. But regardless of the negatives there were many positives and every time the sun graced us with her presence I tried to make the most of it. This involved drinking many of my stellar Pimm's & Ginger cocktails, cooking countless awesome meals with the bounty of summer produce, running along the well-trodden river pathways, early morning rooftop yoga sessions. mid-day tanning breaks sitting in the sunny parking lot at work, and just enjoying the fact that I had a flip flop tan on my feet. Seriously. It's all about the simple things in life, right? There is of course, lots to look forward to over the next couple of months and I must say that I do get way more done during the winter season, but... what can I say? I'm just a summer kind of girl. :)

California Dreaming

Hello! Happy September everyone! Hope you are all enjoying the tail end of your summer. At this moment I am sitting in my rented apartment in Paris while I wait for a taxi to the airport to go back home after a month long European vacation. I have been to Germany, the U.K., Italy and France and can't wait to share my adventures with you but for now it's California Dreaming! :) Enjoy!

Recently I headed down to southern California for a much needed break in the sun. We stayed two nights in Santa Monica and two in Santa Barbara for a mix of both the eclectic city vibe and luxurious relaxation. Highlights included eating at the very hip Gjelina in Venice, as well as a yoga class with the amazing Travis Eliot  at  Bryan Kest's Power Yoga in Santa Monica. Santa Barbara was all about relaxation and a beautiful dinner on the terrace of the newly re-opened  El Encanto hotel. I must say that I am thoroughly head over heels for this state. It felt so good to be "home".

Santa Monica and Venice

Last time I visited LA, I stayed right in the heart of Hollywood on Sunset Boulevard. I quite enjoy this area too but there is something special about the coastal neighbourhoods of the L.A. metropolis. The laid back beachy vibe and anything goes attitude is right up my alley. One could quite easily get used to the calm and cool attitude which was apparent our whole trip. 

Based on the AirBnB hosts recommendations and my own personal research here are some of the places (mostly restaurants) we visited and some that I still want to get to in the area. For simplicity, I have only included those in Venice and Santa Monica.

EAT and DRINK

There was a Starbucks closer to where we were but on holidays I do my best to steer clear of the familiar and our AirBnb host Paul said this was the place to get a good coffee. I agreed. Great vibe, friendly staff. $

Another recommendation from our hosts, this was a great place for breakfast or lunch. Very casual, with an option to take out or sit in the bright and sunny covered patio. I was very happy with my fish tacos here. So simple, but so fresh and delicious.  $

Unfortunately, we didn't get to eat at this stellar raw food veggie restaurant but I still made point of going inside and checking it out. This location is brand new and beautifully designed and the menu sounded excellent. I will definitely go here on my next visit! Whole food amazing-ness and more happy people. Count me in. $

Gjelina 1429 Abbot Kinney Blvd, Venice 310.450.1429

This restaurant was top on my list to visit and I was certainly not disappointed. Gjelina rocks and I will definitely be back for more in the near future. The squash blossom pizza was outstanding, both of us were equally impressed. Also top notch was the butterscotch pot de crème. Oh lala. So good. You must make a reservation for this place, especially if you want to sit outside on their beautiful courtyard patio. Otherwise the line up for the communal inside tables starts at 5pm. $$

On our second night we had planned to check out Carolyn Styne & Suzanne Goin's newly re-opened A.O.C in west L.A. but we decided to keep things easy and avoid the car. Instead we ventured back to Abbot Kinney Boulevard where we were lucky to get a spot at The Tasting Kitchen. What a fun and energetic place! Delicious food, fun wine list, and great service. Favorites of mine were the burrata with basil, oven-dried tomatoes and brown butter (I know, burrata..again..) and the banana semifreddo dessert was perfect! $$

Juice Bars

While I didn't get to go to Moon Juice, we walked right past it and it looked great. Fresh juices and happy people all around, I read that it is pricier than Main Squeeze just a few blocks away, but I think they might make up for it in smiles. $

I really liked this juice bar for their extensive menu and location to where we were staying which made it easy to pick up a freshly pressed green juice and a delicious raw oatmeal after a run along the beach. What I didn't like was how unfriendly and blasé the staff were. $

SHOP - Due to time, I didn't manage to get any shopping in but our hosts recommended Santa Monica Place.  I also passed many great boutiques along Abbot Kinney Boulevard in Venice.

Santa Barbara

I absolutely adored Santa Barbara and its surrounding towns such as Carpinteria and Montecito. Because time was limited we decided against making the forty five minute drive into wine country to Los Olivos and instead focused on R&R and getting the most out of our lovely terrace suite at The Simpson House Inn.

On the first day we had a lovely welcome from Barbara at the Inn, then went for a walk down State Street. Lucky for us there was the most beautiful farmer's market going on and I fell sad with envy at the beauty and variety of the produce. By the time our stroll was done it was time for happy hour at the inn where Barbara had prepared a variety of hors d'oeuvres with three different kinds of local wine to choose from. It was so lovely to sit outside on the porch overlooking the tranquil gardens. That night was Guillaume's birthday and I had reserved a table on the terrace of the newly reopened El Encanto just up the hill from where we were. Beautiful place! Overall, it was a wonderful couple of days and we look forward to going back again soon.

Although we didn't make it to each and everyone of the following, here is a list of my recommendations for the area.

Great experience at this beautiful restaurant. Although we weren't blown away by the food, it was still very good and the service and atmosphere were top-notch. Book an earlier seating to get the most out of the view before nightfall. $$$

There is a lot of hype surrounding neighbouring La Super-Rica Taqueria, which we didn't get to (they were also closed) but Los Agaves was recommended to us and we thought it was absolutely delicious. Went for lunch and tried the tacos, ceviche, and guacamole, The salsa selection is intense! We took our order to go and ate at the beach. Certainly didn't need dinner after this place. $

The only five diamond bed & breakfast in North America, I was very happy with our stay here. It was totally our kind of place. Small, luxurious, intimate, friendly, comfortable, and fun. Yes, it's small quarters in some rooms, but this elegant Victorian manor was built in 1874 when standards were quite different. We stayed in the sun room which offers a patio as big as the room. The inn is centrally located and within walking distance to State Street which offers all amenities and also connects right to the beach if you're up for it. Perfect location, wonderful staff (thank you Barbara!), delicious food, and beautiful grounds. Two nights was not enough. $$$

This luxurious Ranch has been on my radar for quite some time and I was so happy to be able to spend some time walking around this beautiful property and it's gardens on our trip (see photos above). Very peaceful, very California, very private Hollywood bungalow. $$$$

The Biltmore is a very beautiful hotel and of course, the service at Four Seasons is pretty well some of the best you can get. Even if you don't stay here, I would recommend taking a look and having a drink or lunch at their lovely restaurant. The grounds are absolutely gorgeous and the beach is just across the street. We found the beach area here to be quieter and more enjoyable than the main beach further north. $$$$

The first time I came to Santa Barbara over fifteen years ago this is where I stayed and I have to say, I thought it was pretty dandy. I remember that we could see the ocean from our room and well, that was pretty cool. This Motel 6 has since renovated and offers very clean and modern rooms at a very affordable price. $

Conveniently located right across from the ocean, this beachfront hotel seems like a great place to stay. Complimentary breakfast and 2-hour bike rentals. $$

Twenty minutes drive from Santa Barbara, just north of the village of Goleta on the Gaviota coast lies this stunning Spanish colonial style resort and spa. $$$

Ode to Calgary: my mini guide

On June 20th, 2013 I arrived home from beautiful and sunny southern California only to find out my neighbourhood was being evacuated due to a major flood warning. Fortunately, my bags were already packed and I was able to move in with my parents until we were able to go back home eight days later. Calgary does not have a history of natural disasters. Extreme cold weather? Yes, but nothing 'seemingly' worse than that. Alas, later that Thursday night the neighbourhoods were filled with water, cars were overturned, and parts of buildings and homes floated down the angry rivers. Seeing everyone come together to help through these trying times has reminded me what a good-hearted and hard-working bunch Calgarians truly are. I have lived here most of my life and sometimes tend to dismiss the fact that overall Calgary is pretty darn great and there are in fact some very good places to eat, drink, and be entertained, even for the most discerning city dweller. We have emerged from what was once only a steak and potatoes cowboy clad kind of town into a burgeoning Canadian culinary and arts center with a population of over one million people. Calgary is young and energetic and if you haven't been here, I encourage you to give us a try. We are at the foot of some of the most stunning natural landscapes in the world and also host a pretty crazy party every July coined the "Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth" which is definitely worth the visit! Yeehaw! :)

A premium boutique hotel, Hotel Le Germain is an upscale chain from Quebec offering modern, elegantly designed rooms. The Frette linens and Molton Brown amenities are just an idea of what to expect. Out of all of the new restaurants that have popped up in Calgary during the last two years, this has to be my favorite. Cucina has a unique space in the new Eighth Avenue Place building just off the Stephen Avenue Promenade. Simple yet elegant Italian food made with great ingredients and matched with excellent service. If you don't have time for a sit down meal you can also grab and go from the café. Great spot for Saturday brunch too. $$

Teatro is the mother hen of Cucina and has been around for nearly twenty years. The space, a former Dominion Bank building circa. 1911 is very grande and the bar is one of my favorite places to go for Champagne and antipasti on a nice evening. Request a booth if dining in the restaurant or enjoy the patio which overlooks Olympic Plaza. Great for special occasions and a good grown-up evening out. $$$

River Café  Prince's Island Park, Eau Claire 403.261.7670

River Cafe has to be one of the most beautiful restaurants in the city and was a pioneer in Calgary for all things sustainable and local. I adore coming here in the summer to sip rosé on the patio along with some oysters or house-made hummus. Wintertime is equally enchanting when you can cozy up by the fireplace while enjoying a house cured fish and game platter. The food is excellent and well worth the premium price tag. They also serve a beautiful brunch on weekends. $$$

Great vegetarian using fresh and local ingredients. The space is funky and cool and very bohemian vibe. My favorite item on the menu is the Falafal Quesadilla but have also enjoyed the Beachfront Hot Pot and Club Med Salad. Delicious whole food goodness. $

One of my neighborhood spots, I enjoy Vin Room's rooftop patio in the summertime between 5 and 7 to enjoy their fabulously priced oysters and 20% off bubbles. Sun, oysters, Champagne, what else do you need? $$

An old stand-by, I have never been disappointed with Divino. It has always reminded me of a restaurant I might find in an older, more "cool" city with it's brick walls and open kitchen. I enjoy stopping here for a downtown lunch on their patio in the summer or for some wine and cheese in the winter. I will frequently order the Lyonnaise or Niçoise salad and their Lobster Cannelloni is delicious!  $$

Blink is a lovely grown up restaurant with excellent food to match. A little more "dressed up" than neighboring Divino, Blink offers exquisite European cuisine with a local Albertan flair, $$

Named one of Canada's best new restaurants 2012 by EnRoute magazine for very good reason, Model Milk continues to impress. Extremely cool space with innovative takes on classic comfort food. Fricasée of calamari with giuanciale, edamame, and pimenton? Yes please. Calgary is not in Kansas anymore... You can often find me sitting at the bar in their cozy lounge sipping on a MM gin & tonic. $$

Farm is a great little casual restaurant neighbouring my favourite cheese shop, Janice Beaton Fine Cheeses. It has been around for awhile now but I never really a had a chance to fully experience it until recently.  I was super pleased with my dinner of Manitoba Pickerel served with brussel sprout and wild rice sautée, cherry gastrique and almond butter. Being right next door to the cheese shop, they also have a wonderful selection of cheese and specialty meats, etc. Clean and tasty food in a cute and cozy atmosphere. Brunch menu available on the weekends.

Stopping in to get an americano at Analog is my new weekly treat on Friday mornings after a hot flow class at Yoga Santosha. I like to pretend that I am in London or New York City when I come here, as it has a wonderful old-school big city vibe to it. The staff are very friendly, the interior design rocks and best of all the coffee is excellent.

In my opinion, Yann's is the BEST place in the city to get French pastry treats and baguette. His attention to detail and quality exemplified through his products would surpass even some of the patisseries in Paris. Trust me, I have compared! His almond croissant is one of the best I have tasted on this side of the pond as is his baguette. You're in for a treat!

I first met Aviv, the founder of Citizen Sidewalk when he was still delivering his bread on a bike to various locations across the city. I remember telling him that his bread was so good and that I was certain there were many storefronts in his future. He humbly smiled and said, "hopefully one day!" Well that day came within a couple of years just as Aviv's bread came to be recognized as some of the best the city was offering. His sourdough is divine with olive oil and a sprinkle of Maldon salt, or just with a good pat of quality butter (major yum). Of course, he also sells a variety of sweet and savory baked goods. At the Sunnyside location I have tried the pizza, sandwiches, salads, and a few of the dips and let me just say that this is the closest thing to Ottolenghi that Calgary has to offer. So much flavor and so much organic goodness. Sandwiches and bread sell out fast during the day so make sure to call ahead and put something aside if you want to avoid being disappointed.

Another one of my favorite neighborhood shops, Saje relaxes you as soon as you walk in the door. Due to the toxicity of mega-brand perfumes and lotions I have now switched to using a touch of essential oil combined with coconut oil to moisturize my skin and Saje offers a fabulous selection. My current favorite is Neroli essential oil and I also like their Yoga Transitions Mist, which has a wonderful calming effect. Sample one of their teas while you shop, especially nice on a cold winter day.

I have nothing but good things to say about Metrovino, a unique wine boutique which specializes in hard to find wines and spirits from around the globe. Richard Harvey, the store's owner and locally known "wine guru" set up shop here over ten years ago before anyone knew what Prosecco or Malbec was. Today the shop is better than ever, having recently expanded to include a tasting room for classes and events and most importantly, more wine!  Metrovino has some of the best selection of French wine in the city, along with a great selection of rosé and grower, "farmer-fizz" Champagnes. The Cookbook Co. also owns the adjoining cooking school offering cooking classes and culinary soirées with local and celebrity chefs.

This is the cutest little family run shop in one of Calgary's oldest neighbourhoods and has an incredible selection of Mediterranean food stuffs. The freshest feta and pitas, twenty-two types of Greek olives (yes, you read correctly), Turkish delight, and so much more. Not only is the feta amazing (all seven varieties of it), but they also sell haloumi, saganaki, and other hard to find items not common in supermarkets.

I have been attending classes here on and off for the past eleven years and cannot say enough good things about the company. One of my favorite ways to spend a summer afternoon or evening in Calgary is to bike along the Bow River and stop by Prince's Island Park to catch a bit of theatrical action at Shakespeare in the Park. Perfect to bring a picnic to, either from home or order one from nearby River Café.

Growing up in Calgary I was a huge fan of summer visits to Riley Park. But of course life gets busy with all that school and growing up and it wasn't until I started working in Kensington area that I started visiting the park again on a regular basis. Because it is a wading pool, there are lots of young kids on a sunny day but if you don't have kids there is still plenty of green space around to enjoy. Another great spot for suntanning and a picnic in the park. Afterwards, check out the Hillhurst Farmer's Market just across the street. (Wednesdays from 3-7pm).

Calgary Zoo, Botanical Garden & Prehistoric Park  1300 Zoo Road NE 1.800.588.9993

I have been to many great Zoos, my favorite being Animal Kingdom in Disney World, and the amazing San Diego Zoo, but I have to say, I think the Calgary Zoo is pretty great too! There are some beautiful gardens to have a picnic in and a Prehistoric Walk for those who don't have time to get out to the Royal Tyrell Museum but who still want a taste of the dinosaur stuff. A great way to spend a warm day - best during the week to avoid crowds and stroller overload.

Note: Calgary Zoo is closed due to the flooding until July 31st, 2013 at which point they will re-open in phases. 

Elbow River Pathway Along the Elbow River, SW Calgary

This is my favorite pathway in the whole city but that is largely because it's just so convenient for me. When I have a bit more time on the weekends I will spend part of my day running, biking or walking along this pathway. Favorite spots are Sandy Beach (don't be fooled by the name - we are still in Calgary after all) where you can walk up to the Glenmore Dog Park or to the Bluff area in Britannia. A great spot to go rafting down the river.

Glenmore Reservoir Between Glenmore Trail and 90th Avenue SW Calgary

For a great bike ride, continue on from the Elbow River Pathway up to the reservoir and do the whole loop back to downtown. Biking to the reservoir and Weaselhead  Flats area is great way to get out of the city without having to get off your bike. From here you can also access the Calgary Canoe Club which offers canoe and kayak rentals. Or, if sailing is more your style, check out the Glenmore Sailing School. For families, Heritage Park can be a hoot.

Thirty minutes west of Calgary on highway 1A, Glenbow Ranch is one of our go-to parks for sunny day Sunday walks.  The scenery is some of the best in the foothills and there are lots of trails to choose from for bikers and walkers alike.

Totally Energizing Kale, Coconut, & Mango Smoothie

Full of nutrients and alkalizing goodness, this smoothie will score high on your list even if you are new to the whole "greens" thing.  If you are still a little iffy about adding kale to a smoothie just get over it and I promise you will be happy you did. One of my favorite nutrition bloggers, Sarah B from My New Roots can tell you why:

• Kale packs more nutritional punch per calorie than almost any other food on the planet. It is chock-full of vitamin K, an essential vitamin for preventing bone fractures, postmenopausal bone loss, calcification of your arteries, and has even been shown to protect against liver and prostate cancer.
• Kale is the richest source of carotenoids in the leafy-green vegetable family, making it a top cancer-fighter.
• Kale helps to regulate estrogen, protects against heart disease, and regulates blood pressure.

And one of my favorite's:

• The calcium in kale is much more absorbable by the body than cow milk (and ounce for ounce, contains more calcium)! This makes it an excellent choice for both prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, arthritis and bone loss. 

So... We all LOVE kale now, right? Moving on...

I came up with this smoothie last week when I felt the need for something light and fruity but satisfying enough to get me through a hard core spin class later that afternoon.  It was just right.  Not too sweet, nor too "grassy" tasting, this smoothie is also adaptable to your tastes and what you have in the fridge. Maybe you will end up changing the recipe completely and that's great!  Spinach instead of kale? Sure! Raspberries instead of mango? Totally! It's all good!

Totally Energizing Kale, Coconut, & Mango Smoothie

Ingredients

• 2-3 stems of organically grown kale (leaves torn from stems and rinsed)
• Juice of 1 lime (or lemon, or both)
• 1/2 cup mango chunks (fresh or frozen)
• 1 1/4 cups purified water, Alkaline pure if possible.
• 1 tsp ground ginger or 2 tsp fresh grated
• 1/4-1/2 frozen banana (omit if you want less sugar content)
• 1/4 frozen / fresh avocado (optional but adds to creaminess esp. if not using banana)
• 2-3 coconut milk ice cubes (or 1/4 fresh coconut milk if you have on hand)
• 1 scoop vegan vanilla protein powder (I like Sun Warrior brand)
• 1 tsp spirulina powder (optional - this will amp up your green hue and your superfood power!)

Method

1. Pour water into a powerful blender (I have the Breville Hemisphere and although not quite as good as a Vitamix, it does a great job and is less than half the price).
2. Add all ingredients, starting with the kale for best results.
3. Blend, adding more water if necessary. Enjoy!
   

This recipe fills two small mason jars so you could share with whoever is lucky enough or save one for later.  Store in airtight container in the fridge for up to 24 hours.
